Elizabeth Bishop kept a running correspondence with many of her friends throughout her life until her death. Her penpals included Robert Lowell, Marianne Moore, James Merrill, Arthur Gold, Robert Fitzdale, and others.

Elizabeth Bishop kept a running correspondence with her family and friends throughout her life. A good portion of these letters have since been collected and archived into various publications, and some have been kept with the Special Archives at Vassar College. Bishop regularly wrote letters to Robert Lowell, Marianne Moore, Arthur Gold, Robert Fitzdale, and James Merril, among others.
